L1 PM Substates for RC mode require support in the dw-rockchip driver including proper handling of the CLKREQ# sideband signal. It is mostly handled by hardware, but software still needs to set the clkreq fields in the PCIE_CLIENT_POWER_CON register to match the hardware implementation. For more details, see section '18.6.6.4 L1 Substate' in the RK3568 TRM 1.1 Part 2, or section '11.6.6.4 L1 Substate' in the RK3588 TRM 1.0 Part2. 2025-09-02PCI: dw-rockchip: Switch to FIELD_PREP_WM16 macroNicolas Frattaroli
The era of hand-rolled HIWORD_UPDATE macros is over. Like many other Rockchip drivers, pcie-dw-rockchip brings with it its very own flavour of HIWORD_UPDATE. It's occasionally used without a constant mask, which complicates matters. HIWORD_UPDATE_BIT is a confusingly named addition, as it doesn't update the bit, it actually sets all bits in the value to 1. HIWORD_DISABLE_BIT is similarly confusing; it disables several bits at once by using the value as a mask and the inverse of value as the value, and the "disabling only these" effect comes from the hardware actually using the mask. The more obvious approach would've been HIWORD_UPDATE(val, 0) in my opinion. This is part of the motivation why this patch uses hw_bitfield.h's FIELD_PREP_WM16 instead, where possible. FIELD_PREP_WM16 requires a constant bit mask, which isn't possible where the irq number is used to generate a bit mask. For that purpose, we replace it with a more robust macro than what was there but that should also bring close to zero runtime overhead: we actually mask the IRQ number to make sure we're not writing garbage. For the remaining bits, there also are some caveats. For starters, the PCIE_CLIENT_ENABLE_LTSSM and PCIE_CLIENT_DISABLE_LTSSM were named in a manner that isn't quite truthful to what they do. Their modification actually spans not just the LTSSM bit but also another bit, flipping only the LTSSM one, but keeping the other (which according to the TRM has a reset value of 0) always enabled. This other bit is reserved as of the IP version RK3588 uses at least, and I have my doubts as to whether it was meant to be set, and whether it was meant to be set in that code path. Either way, it's confusing. Replace it with just writing either 1 or 0 to the LTSSM bit, using the new FIELD_PREP_WM16 macro from hw_bitfield.h, which grants us the benefit of better compile-time error checking. The change of no longer setting the reserved bit doesn't appear to change the behaviour on RK3568 in RC mode, where it's not marked as reserved. PCIE_CLIENT_RC_MODE/PCIE_CLIENT_EP_MODE was another field that wasn't super clear on what the bit field modification actually is. As far as I can tell, switching to RC mode doesn't actually write the correct value to the field if any of its bits have been set previously, as it only updates one bit of a 4 bit field. Replace it by actually writing the full values to the field, using the new FIELD_PREP_WM16 macro, which grants us the benefit of better compile-time error checking. This patch was tested on RK3588 (PCIe3 x4 controller), RK3576 (PCIe2 x1 controller) and RK3568 (PCIe x2 controller), all in RC mode. Per PCIe r6.0, sec 6.6.1, software must generally wait a minimum of 100ms (PCIE_RESET_CONFIG_WAIT_MS) after Link training completes before sending a Configuration Request. Prior to ec9fd499b9c6 ("PCI: dw-rockchip: Don't wait for link since we can detect Link Up"), dw-rockchip used dw_pcie_wait_for_link(), which waited between 0 and 90ms after the link came up before we enumerate the bus, and this was apparently enough for most devices. After ec9fd499b9c6, rockchip_pcie_rc_sys_irq_thread() started enumeration immediately when handling the link-up IRQ, and devices (e.g., Laszlo Fiat's PLEXTOR PX-256M8PeGN NVMe SSD) may not be ready to handle config requests yet. Delay PCIE_RESET_CONFIG_WAIT_MS after the link-up IRQ before starting enumeration. RK3588 TRM, section "11.6.1.3.3 Hot Reset and Link-Down Reset" states that: If you want to delay link re-establishment (after reset) so that you can reprogram some registers through DBI, you must set app_ltssm_enable =0 immediately after core_rst_n as shown in above. This can be achieved by enable the app_dly2_en, and end-up the delay by assert app_dly2_done. I.e. setting app_dly2_en will automatically deassert app_ltssm_enable on a hot reset, and setting app_dly2_done will re-assert app_ltssm_enable, re-enabling link training. When receiving a hot reset/link-down IRQ when running in EP mode, we will call dw_pcie_ep_linkdown(), which may update registers through DBI. Unless link training is inhibited, these register updates race with the link training. To avoid the race, set PCIE_LTSSM_APP_DLY2_EN so the controller never automatically trains the link after a link-down or hot reset interrupt. That way any DBI updates done in the dw_pcie_ep_linkdown() path will happen while the link is still down. irq_domain_add_linear() is going away as being obsolete now. Switch to the preferred irq_domain_create_linear(). That differs in the first parameter: It takes more generic struct fwnode_handle instead of struct device_node. Therefore, of_fwnode_handle() is added around the parameter. Note some of the users can likely use dev->fwnode directly instead of indirect of_fwnode_handle(dev->of_node). But dev->fwnode is not guaranteed to be set for all, so this has to be investigated on case to case basis (by people who can actually test with the HW). 2025-04-27PCI: dw-rockchip: Enable ASPM L0s capability for both RC and EP modesShawn Lin
L0s capability isn't enabled on all Rockchip SoCs by default, so enable it in order to make ASPM L0s work on Rockchip platforms. Testing the L0s for a long time revealed that the default N_FTS value of 210 in the hardware doesn't work stable and causes LTSSM to switch between L0s and Recovery states. This leads to long exit latency and also causes link down sometimes. So override the value to the max 255, which seems to work fine under both PHYs used on Rockchip platforms. rockchip_pcie_link_up() currently has two issues: 1. Value 0x11 of PCIE_L0S_ENTRY corresponds to L0 state, not L0S. So the naming is wrong from the very beginning. 2. Checking for value 0x11 treats other states like L0S and L1 as link down, which is wrong. Hence, remove the PCIE_L0S_ENTRY check and also its definition. This allows adding ASPM support in the successive commits. When running the RK3588 in Endpoint mode, with an Intel host with IOMMU enabled, the host side prints: DMAR: VT-d detected Invalidation Time-out Error: SID 0 When running the RK3588 in Endpoint mode, with an AMD host with IOMMU enabled, the host side prints: iommu ivhd0: AMD-Vi: Event logged [IOTLB_INV_TIMEOUT device=63:00.0 address=0x42b5b01a0] Rockchip has confirmed that the ATS support for RK3588 only works when running the PCIe controller in Root Complex (RC) mode, see: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-pci/93cdce39-1ae6-4939-a3fc-db10be7564e5@rock-chips.com Usually, to handle these issues, we add a quirk for the PCI vendor and device ID in drivers/pci/quirks.c with quirk_no_ats(). That is because we cannot usually modify the capabilities on the EP side. In this case, we can modify the capabilities on the EP side. Thus, hide the broken ATS capability on RK3588 when running in EP mode. That way, we don't need any quirk on the host side, and we see no errors on the host side, and we can run pci_endpoint_test successfully, with the IOMMU enabled on the host side. Looking at section "11.4.4.29 USP_PCIE_RESBAR Registers Summary" in the Technical Reference Manual (TRM) for RK3588, we can see that none of the BARs are Fixed BARs, but actually Resizable BARs. I couldn't find any reference in the TRM for RK3568, but looking at the downstream PCIe endpoint driver, both RK3568 and RK3588 are treated as the same, so the BARs on RK3568 must also be Resizable BARs. Now when we actually have support for Resizable BARs, let's configure these BARs as such. The Root Complex specific device tree binding for pcie-dw-rockchip has the 'sys' interrupt marked as required. The driver requests the 'sys' IRQ unconditionally, and errors out if not provided. Thus, we can unconditionally set 'use_linkup_irq', so dw_pcie_host_init() doesn't wait for the link to come up. This will skip the wait for link up (since the bus will be enumerated once the link up IRQ is triggered), which reduces the bootup time. 2025-01-18PCI: dw-rockchip: Enumerate endpoints based on dll_link_up IRQNiklas Cassel
Most boards using the pcie-dw-rockchip PCIe controller lack standard hotplug support. Thus, when an endpoint is attached to the SoC, users have to rescan the bus manually to enumerate the device. This can be avoided by using the 'dll_link_up' interrupt in the combined system interrupt 'sys'. Once the 'dll_link_up' IRQ is received, the bus underneath the host bridge is scanned to enumerate PCIe endpoint devices. This implements the same functionality that was implemented in the DWC based pcie-qcom driver in 4581403f6792 ("PCI: qcom: Enumerate endpoints based on Link up event in 'global_irq' interrupt"). The Root Complex specific device tree binding for pcie-dw-rockchip already has the 'sys' interrupt marked as required, so there is no need to update the device tree binding. This also means that we can request the 'sys' IRQ unconditionally. PERST# is active low according to the PCIe specification. However, the existing pcie-dw-rockchip.c driver does: gpiod_set_value(..., 0); msleep(100); gpiod_set_value(..., 1); when asserting + deasserting PERST#. This is of course wrong, but because all the device trees for this compatible string have also incorrectly marked this GPIO as ACTIVE_HIGH: $ git grep -B 10 reset-gpios arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3568* $ git grep -B 10 reset-gpios arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3588* The actual toggling of PERST# is correct, and we cannot change it anyway, since that would break device tree compatibility. However, this driver does request the GPIO to be initialized as GPIOD_OUT_HIGH, which does cause a silly sequence where PERST# gets toggled back and forth for no good reason. Fix this by requesting the GPIO to be initialized as GPIOD_OUT_LOW (which for this driver means PERST# asserted). This will avoid an unnecessary signal change where PERST# gets deasserted (by devm_gpiod_get_optional()) and then gets asserted (by rockchip_pcie_start_link()) just a few instructions later. The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes.
