There is simply no need for the hugely confusing concept of 'non-swap' swap entries now we have the concept of softleaf entries and relevant softleaf_xxx() helpers. Adjust all callers to use these instead and remove non_swap_entry() altogether. No functional change intended. 2025-11-24KVM: s390: fix missing present bit for gmap pudsClaudio Imbrenda
For hugetlbs, gmap puds have the present bit set. For normal puds (which point to ptes), the bit is not set. This is in contrast to the normal userspace puds, which always have the bit set for present pmds. This causes issues when ___pte_offset_map() is modified to only check for the present bit. The solution to the problem is simply to always set the present bit for present gmap pmds. The KMSG_COMPONENT macro is a leftover of the s390 specific "kernel message catalog" which never made it upstream. Remove the macro in order to get rid of a pointless indirection. Replace all users with the string it defines. There shouldn't be any 31 bit code around anymore that matters. Remove the compat layer support required to run 31 bit code. Reason for removal is code simplification and reduced test effort. Note that this comes without any deprecation warnings added to config options, or kernel messages, since most likely those would be ignored anyway. If it turns out there is still a reason to keep the compat layer this can be reverted at any time in the future. 2025-11-14s390/mm: Fix __ptep_rdp() inline assemblyHeiko Carstens
When a zero ASCE is passed to the __ptep_rdp() inline assembly, the generated instruction should have the R3 field of the instruction set to zero. However the inline assembly is written incorrectly: for such cases a zero is loaded into a register allocated by the compiler and this register is then used by the instruction. This means that selected TLB entries may not be flushed since the specified ASCE does not match the one which was used when the selected TLB entries were created. Fix this by removing the asce and opt parameters of __ptep_rdp(), since all callers always pass zero, and use a hard-coded register zero for the R3 field. In case of a kernel crash caused by a protection exception, print the unmodified PSW address as reported by the CPU. The protection exception handler modifies the PSW address in order to keep fault handling easy, however that leads to misleading call traces. Therefore restore the original PSW address before printing it. Print "SOP", "ESOP-1", or "ESOP-2" depending on the type of the installed Suppression-on-Protection facility. This also gives additional information about the validity and meaning of the TEID bits. 2025-10-29s390/mm: Fix memory leak in add_marker() when kvrealloc() failsMiaoqian Lin
The function has a memory leak when kvrealloc() fails. The function directly assigns NULL to the markers pointer, losing the reference to the previously allocated memory. This causes kvfree() in pt_dump_init() to free NULL instead of the leaked memory. Fix by: 1. Using kvrealloc() uniformly for all allocations 2. Using a temporary variable to preserve the original pointer until allocation succeeds 3. The pt_dump_seq_puts() macro incorrectly uses seq_printf() instead of seq_puts(). This is both a performance issue and conceptually wrong, as the macro name suggests plain string output (puts) but the implementation uses formatted output (printf). The macro is used in dump_pagetables.c:67-68 and 131 to output constant strings. Using seq_printf() adds unnecessary overhead for format string parsing. 2025-10-14s390/mm: Support removal of boot-allocated virtual memory mapSumanth Korikkar
On s390, memory blocks are not currently removed via arch_remove_memory(). With upcoming dynamic memory (de)configuration support, runtime removal of memory blocks is possible. This internally involves tearing down identity mapping, virtual memory mappings and freeing the physical memory backing the struct pages metadata. During early boot, physical memory used to back the struct pages metadata in vmemmap is allocated through: setup_arch() -> sparse_init() -> sparse_init_nid() -> __populate_section_memmap() -> vmemmap_alloc_block_buf() -> sparse_buffer_alloc() -> memblock_alloc() Here, sparse_init_nid() sets up virtual-to-physical mapping for struct pages backed by memblock_alloc(). This differs from runtime addition of hotplug memory which uses the buddy allocator later. To correctly free identity mappings, vmemmap mappings during hot-remove, boot-time and runtime allocations must be distinguished using the PageReserved bit: * Boot-time memory, such as identity-mapped page tables allocated via boot_crst_alloc() and reserved via reserve_pgtables() is marked PageReserved in memmap_init_reserved_pages(). * Physical memory backing vmemmap (struct pages from memblock_alloc()) is also marked PageReserved similarly. During teardown, PageReserved bit is checked to distinguish between boot-time allocation or buddy allocation. 2025-09-13mm: introduce memdesc_flags_tMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)
Patch series "Add and use memdesc_flags_t". At some point struct page will be separated from struct slab and struct folio. This is a step towards that by introducing a type for the 'flags' word of all three structures. This gives us a certain amount of type safety by establishing that some of these unsigned longs are different from other unsigned longs in that they contain things like node ID, section number and zone number in the upper bits. That lets us have functions that can be easily called by anyone who has a slab, folio or page (but not easily by anyone else) to get the node or zone. There's going to be some unusual merge problems with this as some odd bits of the kernel decide they want to print out the flags value or something similar by writing page->flags and now they'll need to write page->flags.f instead. That's most of the churn here. Maybe we should be removing these things from the debug output? This patch (of 11): Wrap the unsigned long flags in a typedef. In upcoming patches, this will provide a strong hint that you can't just pass a random unsigned long to functions which take this as an argument. The s390 implementation of ptep_modify_prot_start() currently does preempt_disable(), and the preempt_enable() is done later in ptep_modify_prot_commit(). This logic is not really required, because the PTE lock must be held over the complete prot_start/commit transaction, as described in the comment of the generic implementation of ptep_modify_prot_start(). That comment also mentions that this interface should be batchable, and modify_prot_start_ptes() might start a transaction over a batch of PTEs, implemented as a simple loop over ptep_modify_prot_start(). In this case, the preempt_disable() in ptep_modify_prot_start() would be called multiple times, before the corresponding preempt_enable() calls happen, and this can lead to a preempt_count overflow. To fix this, simply remove the preempt_disable/enable() calls in ptep_modify_prot_start/commit(), and rely on the PTE lock being held. Commit cac1db8c3aad ("mm: optimize mprotect() by PTE batching") made use of this PTE batching for the first time, and triggers warnings like this: DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON((preempt_count() & PREEMPT_MASK) >= PREEMPT_MASK - 10) BUG: sleeping function called from invalid context at mm/mprotect.c:576 Hence, add a Fixes tag on that commit. Commit 8211dad627981 ("s390: add pte_free_defer() for pgtables sharing page") added a warning to pte_free_defer(), on our request. It was meant to warn if this would ever be reached for KVM guest mappings, because the page table would be freed w/o a gmap_unlink(). THP mappings are not allowed for KVM guests on s390, so this should never happen. However, it is possible that the warning is triggered in a valid case as false-positive. s390_enable_sie() takes the mmap_lock, marks all VMAs as VM_NOHUGEPAGE and splits possibly existing THP guest mappings. mm->context.has_pgste is set to 1 before that, to prevent races with the mm_has_pgste() check in MADV_HUGEPAGE. khugepaged drops the mmap_lock for file mappings and might run in parallel, before a vma is marked VM_NOHUGEPAGE, but after mm->context.has_pgste was set to 1. If it finds file mappings to collapse, it will eventually call pte_free_defer(). This will trigger the warning, but it is a valid case because gmap is not yet set up, and the THP mappings will be split again. Therefore, remove the warning and the comment. When KCOV is enabled all functions get instrumented, unless the __no_sanitize_coverage attribute is used. To prepare for __no_sanitize_coverage being applied to __init functions, we have to handle differences in how GCC's inline optimizations get resolved. For s390 this exposed a place where the __init annotation was missing but ended up being "accidentally correct". Fix this cases and force a couple functions to be inline with __always_inline. 2025-07-09mm/ptdump: take the memory hotplug lock inside ptdump_walk_pgd()Anshuman Khandual
Memory hot remove unmaps and tears down various kernel page table regions as required. The ptdump code can race with concurrent modifications of the kernel page tables. When leaf entries are modified concurrently, the dump code may log stale or inconsistent information for a VA range, but this is otherwise not harmful. But when intermediate levels of kernel page table are freed, the dump code will continue to use memory that has been freed and potentially reallocated for another purpose. In such cases, the ptdump code may dereference bogus addresses, leading to a number of potential problems. To avoid the above mentioned race condition, platforms such as arm64, riscv and s390 take memory hotplug lock, while dumping kernel page table via the sysfs interface /sys/kernel/debug/kernel_page_tables. Similar race condition exists while checking for pages that might have been marked W+X via /sys/kernel/debug/kernel_page_tables/check_wx_pages which in turn calls ptdump_check_wx(). Instead of solving this race condition again, let's just move the memory hotplug lock inside generic ptdump_check_wx() which will benefit both the scenarios. 2025-05-28KVM: s390: Refactor and split some gmap helpersClaudio Imbrenda
Refactor some gmap functions; move the implementation into a separate file with only helper functions. The new helper functions work on vm addresses, leaving all gmap logic in the gmap functions, which mostly become just wrappers. The whole gmap handling is going to be moved inside KVM soon, but the helper functions need to touch core mm functions, and thus need to stay in the core of kernel.
